In June of 2015, chip behemoth Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) announced that it intended to buy Altera, a major supplier of chips known as field programmable gate arrays, or FPGAs, for $16.7 billion. FPGAs, Intel explains, are chips “where a large majority of the electrical functionality inside the device can be changed.”
