What is an Ayam Cemani?
The Indonesian Ayam Cemani is the crown jewel of any poultry enthusiast lucky enough to own one. Our flock has a gentile disposition that belies it’s ultra exotic appearance. Our breeding flock of Ayam Cemani are completely black, black combs, waddles, right down to the toenails.
What kind of blood does an Ayam Cemani have?
The blood of the Ayam Cemani is normally colored. The bird’s black color occurs as a result of excess pigmentation of the tissues, caused by a genetic condition known as fibro melanosis. This gene is also found in some other black fowl breeds. The hens lay cream-colored eggs, although they are poor setters and rarely hatch their own brood.
How many toes does an Ayam Cemani have?
You will notice that the Ayam Cemani holds its tail high with muscular legs and four toes per foot. At this time, the Ayam Cemani has not yet been accepted by the American Poultry Association to be shown in its own class. Ayam Cemanis are not known for being overly friendly, but that’s not to say they are standoffish, either.
Where did the Ayam Bekisar chicken come from?
It is believed to be an offshoot of the Ayam Bekisar chicken, which lives on a small island in Indonesia. The Ayam Bekisar originated from matching the green jungle fowl with some domesticated red jungle fowl. This was a tricky process as certain crosses will be infertile.

How often do Ayam Cemani lay eggs?
Ayam Cemani Egg Laying The Ayam Cemani is a fairly poor egg layer. On average, they will lay around 80 eggs per year, which is around 1 egg per week. They do seem to go ‘off lay’ for an extended period of time.
Are Ayam Cemani test bred before entering the breeder program?
Yes! All of our Ayam Cemani are test bred before entering our breeder program, even when we “know” that they are double copy carriers from within our own program. This creates a system of checks and balances to ensure that we maintain the best quality we can.
