How hard is the Death Ride?
The Death Ride is an extremely challenging yet fun event. It is very well organized and in our three times participating, we have never had any form of bad experience – it’s all good . . . well, except for 127 miles and 15,000′ of climbing in one day – OUCH!
Is Death Ride Cancelled?
We are very saddened to report that due to the fast-growing Tamarack Fire, tomorrow’s Death Ride has been cancelled. We will let all registered riders know what our next steps are once things have settled down.
How long is the Death Ride?
The Route. Starting and finishing at Turtle Rock Park in Markleeville, Calif., the 103 mile course begins at 5:00 am and covers both sides of three mountain passes: Monitor Pass (Hwy 89), Ebbetts Pass (Hwy 4), and the Pacific Grade (Hwy 4). The full course is not for the faint at heart!
Where is the Death Ride?
Located in the stunning California Alps, the Death Ride® course covers the traditional five mountain passes. This super challenging course includes climbing both sides of Monitor Pass, both sides of Ebbetts Pass, and the final climb up the east side of Carson Pass.
Why is it called the Death Ride?
The first order of business was to downplay the name “Death Ride” out of respect for the family of Dr. Scott Lambert, who died in a single-vehicle accident during last year’s ride. This year, the event is officially known as “The Tour of the California Alps – The Death Ride”, or “The Tour” for short.

On and around July 16, 2021, the Tamarack Fire burned through Grover Hot Springs SP and destroyed multiple state park housing structures, the maintenance shop, maintenance vehicles, and several trail structures.

Will the Tour of California return?
Race organisers have announced that the USA’s biggest cycling race, the Tour of California, will not run in 2020. AEG Sports confirmed that the men’s and women’s WorldTour races would be put on hiatus for next season due to mounting financial challenges, but hope to relaunch in 2022 under a new business model.
