Did the Chieftain tank ever see combat?
Like its European competitors, Chieftain found a large export market in the Middle East, but unlike Centurion, it was not adopted by any other NATO or Commonwealth country. Chieftain proved itself capable in combat and able to be upgraded, both for overall improvement and to meet local requirements.

Was Chieftain a good tank?
It was the “most formidable main battle tank in the world” with, at the time of its introduction in 1966 the most powerful main gun and most effective armour of any tank yet made. The Chieftain also introduced a supine (reclining backwards) driver position, enabling a heavily sloped hull with reduced height.

What was the FV4202?
In effect, the FV4202 was a shorter Centurion chassis with a prototype of what would become the Chieftain turret, but armed with the 20pdr gun. This work led to a War Office specification for a new tank.
